LF Decentralized Trust hosted a webinar with DSR, a member of LF Decentralized Trust, on Hiero: an ACA-Py plugin for the Hedera ledger. Up until recently, ACA-Py had relied mainly on Hyperledger Indy as its verifiable data registry (VDR) for working with AnonCreds. That began to change. In 2025, Hedera became a practical alternative, offering a stable, enterprise-ready blockchain that had been around for years and had an active developer and business community behind it.
Hedera’s support in ACA-Py and similar projects like Credo made it possible to use different types of credentials and protocols while still working within the AnonCreds framework. This opened up new options for building SSI systems beyond the Indy ecosystem.
In the session, we walked through the LFDT Hiero project and the plugin that added support for using the Hedera ledger as a VDR in ACA-Py. We demonstrated how credential issuance and verification worked in this setup and discussed what was involved in integrating it into existing ACA-Py–based projects.
The session was especially relevant for teams exploring alternatives to Indy or those considering Hedera for identity-related use cases.
